There are reports of heavy traffic in Cardiff city centre tonight (December 7), with long delays and queueing traffic on a number of routes. Traffic monitoring website, Inrix, was reporting heavy traffic on a number of Cardiff roads, including Whitchurch Road, City Road, Western Avenue and Bridge Road.
There were also reports from drivers of issues around Callaghan Square, Central Link and Taffs Mead Embankment, with traffic stationary for periods and very slow moving at other times. Were you affected by tonight's traffic chaos? Tell us about your experience here.
Earlier, heavy traffic was reported on the A4232 due to a broken down vehicle on the northbound stretch, after the B4267 Leckwith Road (Leckwith Interchange). All lanes have since been re-opened. But travel time was also added onto popular commuting roads in Cardiff, such as Western Avenue, Bridge Road, Caerphilly Road, Castle Street, City Road and North Road.
What was the cause?
It is not known if this is the cause of all the traffic problems in Cardiff tonight - but it was the only road or lane closure being reported and may have had a serious knock-on effect on other routes. The travel time on the A4161 Castle Street Kingsway and North Road around Cardiff Castle was said to be four minutes.
The traffic monitoring website also reported queueing traffic on the A4055 Cardiff Road Westbound from B4267 Redlands Road (Merrie Harrier traffic lights, (Llandough) to Millbrook Road (Dinas Powys). There were reports of queueing traffic on A469 Caerphilly Road Southbound around Maes-Y-Coed Road / Ty-Wern Road (Lidl traffic lights), and also heavy traffic on A4054 Bridge Road inbound between Gabalfa Road (Cow and Snuffers Mini-Roundabout) and A4119 Llantrisant Road (The Heathcock Mini-Roundabout).
One driver said: "So once you get through Grangetown and Riverside going west into Canton it clears up quickly. But it has just taken me an hour to get from Splott to Llandaff."
