Cardiff homes evacuated as lane cordoned off in grenade scare

More than 20 homes were evacuated on a Cardiff street amid concerns over a suspicious package. South Wales Police cordoned off a lane behind Clive Street in Grangetown shortly before 1pm on Saturday after a report that hand grenades had been found, but it turned out to be a false alarm.

Some 24 homes on the side of Clive Street near the lane were evacuated from the Penarth Road end up to the Best Choice tyre shop, a resident told WalesOnline. He said armed officers were on the scene as people had to leave their homes for around 10 minutes.

A police officer on the scene said there was concern because someone had seen some “military” cardboard boxes in the lane. A spokeswoman for the force added there had been a report of hand grenades but there turned out to be nothing but empty boxes. There were at least five police vehicles on the scene which left by about 1.20pm. You can read more of the latest breaking news from Wales here.
