A long-standing former Cardiff business has been demolished to make way for a block of flats. The former Radiocraft store in the Canton area of the city has been knocked down after it was announced in March 2020 that the shop would not be re-opening as the business moved to Penarth and re-branded as Vale Kitchen Studio.
The now-vacant site will be developed into a block of flats after planning permission was granted in March this year. The development, which is situated between the Tesco in Cowbridge Road East and the Ivor Davies Wetherspoon pub, would be split across two blocks. A shared courtyard would separate the blocks.
The development comprises of seven two-bedroom and three one-bedroom flats as well as a ground-floor commercial unit. Developers Taff Housing said they wanted to "replicate the successful" redevelopment of the former Canton police station nearby. That building was also developed into flats and houses the Hard Lines coffee shop on the ground floor.

The new development on the Radiocraft site would have a commercial unit using the entire ground-floor space with the flats built to the rear and above. Another building on the road set to be demolished to make way for flats is the Royal Mail sorting office, which would be redeveloped into 20 one- and-two-bedroom apartments.
Just around the corner, in Leckwith Road, the Canton Community Hall will be knocked down and replaced with a new community hall and 41 apartments for the elderly. The new building would result in the loss of the Leckwith Road pay-and-display car park, reducing the total number of spaces by 65.
A petition was organised against the development with the organiser voicing concerns about how the loss of car parking would affect the shops in Cowbridge Road. Several other car parks exist nearby and council planning policy encourages fewer parking spaces in locations where residents can easily walk to local shops and services or take public transport. According to the design and access statement for the Radiocraft site there is no car parking provided. Cycle storage will be placed at the rear of the building.
