A highly acclaimed and well-loved curry restaurant in Cardiff has been named the best curry restaurant in Wales at the prestigious British Curry Awards. The Purple Poppadom, in Canton, has been given the top spot for the second year in a row at the awards which are voted for by the public.
Established in 2011, Purple Poppadom was founded by chef director Anand George who serves a menu of refined Indian cooking with a focus on the region of Kerala, where he originally hails from. Over the years, Purple Poppadom has received multiple accolades including a listing in the Michelin guide, a rave review from Observer food critic Jay Rayner, and it was previously named Indian Restaurant of the Year in the South Wales Echo Food and Drinks Awards.
Posting on their Instagram Purple Poppadom said: "We have just been named Best in Wales @BritishCurryAwards!!! We are so happy...Thank you to each and every one of you for your support. PP Team." You can keep up to date with the latest What's On news by signing up to the newsletter here.

In 2021 The Purple Poppadom underwent a huge refurbishment, to help celebrate the restaurant's tenth anniversary. The restaurant’s original pinks and purples were replaced with neon lighting, exposed brickwork, splashes of neon and abstract wall murals.
Customers can also enjoy The Purple Poppadom cooking at Cardiff Market as owner Anand George opened up Tukka Tuk on the top floor of the market in 2021. Elsewhere four Welsh restaurants were nominated at the Asian Restaurant and Takeaway awards, the Duchess of Deli in Cardiff, The Grand Sultan in Port Talbot, the Mint Room in Barry and the Elaichi in Carmarthenshire.
The Elaichi came out on top and won the chef of the year 2022 award for Wales at the Asian Restaurant and Takeaway Awards, recently. You can read our review of the Elaichi here.
