Cardiff City transfer news as Tottenham signing 'close' and Morison reveals his stance on those Andy Carroll links

Here are your Cardiff City headlines for Thursday, August 4.

Kion Etete signing close

Cardiff City are 'close' to the signing of Tottenham striker Kion Etete, manager Steve Morison has confirmed.

WalesOnline revealed on Tuesday that Cardiff were interested in the 20-year-old Spurs striker, with the player having been booked in for a medical with the club on Wednesday.

The 6ft 4in forward is expected to cost City £500,000 plus add-ons and will be the first time the Bluebirds have paid a decent-sized transfer fee for a player since Max Watters joined from Crawley Town in January 2021. He would become Cardiff's 14th signing of the summer.

"He is close to coming. It's never done until that bit of paper is signed," Morison said of Etete.

"He is an investment for the football club. He has all the attributes to be a top striker. He is young, hungry. He is a player we see as a club that is ready now and can get better and better. We’d like to see how far we can take him."

Morison laughs off Carroll links

Morison also refused to narrow down further additions only to the striker department - although he did make a point of laughing off links to former England, Liverpool and Newcastle striker Andy Carroll.

Etete will be the only striker City have brought in during this window and it is widely believed that Cardiff are in for one more before the window closes. Indeed, Mehmet Dalman recently said the club were after a more experienced striker on loan.

And when asked if the Bluebirds were looking for another striker before the window is closed, Morison did not necessarily narrow down his search only to a forward.

"We are looking for all types of players that can make us better," he said. "I’m really happy with that signing (Etete) if it’s finished off. We will see what happens going forward."

When asked specifically about whether a potential second forward addition would be a more experienced player, he added: "I never said Kion was for the future. He is a future investment for this football club, because if he does what we think he can do, he will be a top, top player and could attract people from all over the place.

"The notion I’m looking for Andy Carroll, for example, is miles away from it!"

That, of course, is in reference to former Bluebirds striker Nathan Blake touting Carroll's name after the win over Norwich City last weekend. You can read more about that here.

Eli King and Oliver Denham loan chances

Morison has not ruled out Eli King and Oliver Denham heading out on loan this summer.

The young duo came into the Bluebirds side towards the back end of last season, however a flurry of transfers suddenly sees them drop down the pecking order.

As things stand, there is nothing in the pipeline pertaining to sending them out on loan, however Morison said that could change as we near the end of the transfer window.

"At the minute they’re here they’re a part of it," he said of Denham and King. "You’re arguably looking at Eli and he’s one injury from being involved, but if everyone is fit then he's not involved. It's the same for him as well.

"The same with Ollie Denham. If you change to a three (at the back) for a game then he might be playing. I think it's good for them to stay around.

"If we get to the window and we’re pretty set with what we are going to do, we’ll look at it again. But there's nothing happening imminently."

Cardiff and Norwich charged by FA

The FA have released the following statement after a flashpoint in the match saw both sides come together in a heated melee.

A coming-together between both sides took place not long after the hour mark after Joe Ralls committed a foul in the middle of the pitch on Teemu Pukki. Perry Ng then shoved the Finn over to waste a little more time, before a horde of Canaries players flocked to Pukki's aid.

Ng was pushed over himself in the melee and four players were booked for the incident.

"Cardiff City FC and Norwich City FC have been charged with a breach of FA Rule E.20.1 following their EFL Championship fixture on Saturday 30 July 2022," read the FA's statement.

"It is alleged that both clubs failed to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion during the 66th minute of the fixture.

"Both clubs have until Monday 8 August to provide a response."

Drameh likely staying at Leeds

There has been much discussion surrounding Cody Drameh's future this season, having ripped it up at Cardiff last term.

He won the club's Player of the Season award and was a breath of fresh air down the Bluebirds' right-hand side. There has been much talk about where he will end up this term, however he might just stay at Elland Road.

Sources have indicated he is most likely to remain with Leeds this season and will fight to become a regular in Jesse Marsch's side. From his showings with Cardiff, he is more than capable of forcing his way into the side.
