Cardiff City transfer news as Stoke City target forward and new assistant coach revealed

Here are your Cardiff City headlines for Monday, June 19.

Stoke City keen on winger

Cardiff City's championship rivals Stoke City are reportedly keen on signing Aston Villa starlet Jaden Philogene after his barnstorming season with the Bluebirds.

Philogene started life in south Wales slowly, but once he hit his stride he was at times devastating and was Cardiff's most creative player by a country mile throughout the campaign.

It is thought that Unai Emery is keen to offload Philogene, though, with a number of his own signings targeted this summer which is likely to oust the 21-year-old. For the latest Cardiff news sent straight to your inbox, sign up here.

And our sister title, Stoke-on-Trent Live, state that the Potters are keen to bring him back to the bet365 Stadium after previously having a loan stint there. Whether a permanent or loan move is in the offing is not stated.

As for Cardiff, well, their hands are tied at the moment. They would love to have him back, no doubt, but are currently unable to pay a fee for players. Whether Villa would loan him or not seems unlikely this stage, with the Midlands club keen to cash in while he still has at least two years left on his deal.

Assistant coach to be named

Nikolaos Karydas is set to be named Erol Bulut's assistant manager at Cardiff City, WalesOnline understands.

Eagle-eyed Cardiff City fans thought they spotted a member of Bulut's new backroom staff during Wales' 4-2 defeat by Armenia on Friday night. The camera panned to Bulut in the stands, chatting away to a man donning a baseball cap in the stands.

And that indeed was 'Nikos' Karydas, who was Bulut's fitness coach at Gaziantep. The pair met when Karydas was fitness coach at Olympiacos during Bulut's playing days there.

However, he will take on the role of assistant manager at Cardiff - not fitness coach. It is understood he will be the club's new assistant, 'with a focus on performance' - which is presumably what chairman Mehmet Dalman was alluding to when he said a new performance coach was arriving.

Karydas was most recently caretaker manager at Greek club Veria NPS for three games at the end of the 2022/23 season.

An announcement on the full backroom team is expected soon.

New kits revealed

Cardiff City have unveiled their new home kit for the 2023/24 season.

It is the second year the club have had their kits made by New Balance, having shifted from adidas last year. The front sponsor on the shirt, which has been Malaysia Berjaya for three seasons, has reverted back to Visit Malaysia, the sponsor on the shirt during the promotion and Premier League campaigns.

It is the first kit Cardiff will play in under new manager Erol Bulut, who was unveiled as the new Bluebirds boss a fortnight ago.
