Cardiff City transfer news as star makes Sheffield Wednesday admission and relegation picture takes turn

These are your Cardiff City headlines on Sunday, February 26.

McGuinness' admission

Cardiff defender Mark McGuinness says it is good to be back at the club and revealed he wants to play at the highest level possible.

McGuinness spent the first half of the season on loan with Sheffield Wednesday and was arguably their standout player during that period, becoming a bit of a fans' favourite at Hillsborough.

His performances caught the eye back in south Wales and he was recalled and was thrust straight back into the team where he has shone ever since.

He admits he was doing well in the Steel City with the Owls but playing in the Championship was always his aim.

"It's really good to be back," he said before the defeat at Norwich City on Saturday. "I enjoyed myself at the club last season and already knew the lads from pre-season, so to be back with them is nice.

"I was doing well in Sheffield and the team was doing well. But I wanted to be playing at highest level possible. To come back and be playing in the Championship is my goal. I've always enjoyed playing here. It's nice to be back playing for the fans and alongside these players."

It's clear that McGuinness is a fan of the Sabri Lamouchi-Sol Bamba partnership at the Cardiff helm, and having the latter back at the club is a real boon.

He added: "Having Sol on board is massive. He's been there and done that. It's great for him to come back in and it is a boost for everyone. For a new gaffer to come in is always hard.

"His first game - for the Luton game, he'd only had two training sessions with us. It was hard to implement what he wanted. But as time has gone on, we've got to know him and he's got to know us. He can see we are playing the way that he wants to and the results have changed.

"Hopefully that continues throughout the rest of the season and more results will follow."

Relegation picture

Cardiff were defeated by Norwich City 2-0 yesterday but there is a saving grace despite the outcome in Norfolk.

A quick look at the results of other teams in the relegation mix makes for positive reading for the Bluebirds.

Hull City, Stoke City, Queens Park Rangers and Birmingham City - all above Cardiff at present - all lost, while current bottom three Huddersfield Town, Blackpool and Wigan all went down to defeats too.

Rotherham United, one place above Lamouchi's team, play Swansea City in south Wales on Monday night. In an odd turn of events it will be a match Cardiff fans will want their fierce rivals to win to keep the Millers within striking distance.

"I will look (at the other results) after the press conference," Lamouchi said after the game at Carrow Road. "But I was disappointed. Because we were probably thinking, after winning two games, we are better than that.

"But no, we are where we are. We will fight until the end to save the club and get three teams behind us at the end of the season. That is our goal."

Bluebirds win under-18s derby in emphatic fashion

A hat-trick from Bluebirds youngster Tanatswa Nyakuhwa earned Cardiff the South Wales derby bragging rights on Saturday.

The mini under-18s derby took place at Swansea's Landore training base.

The hosts took the lead through Josh Carey's strike just before the half-hour mark, but the visitors hit back with two goals in six minutes, courtesy of Japhet Matondo and Nyakuhwa.

The latter then netted twice in the second half to complete his hat-trick, giving the Bluebirds all three points.
