Cardiff City transfer news as new top-flight club come in for Gareth Bale and Jed Wallace situation unravels

Here is your Cardiff City transfer news for Monday, May 23.

Southampton latest linked with Bale

Southampton are the latest club to be linked with a move for Gareth Bale this summer.

Cardiff are thought to be right in the conversation when it comes to the Wales captain's next destination, given it is his boyhood club and he is "likely" to be moving back to play English football next term, according to his agent Jonathan Barnett.

Barnett also said in an exclusive interview with WalesOnline that, while Bale is yet to decide publicly where his future lies, Cardiff has "a lot of plusses". Indeed, Bale's national team boss Rob Page said that a move to Cardiff City Stadium "ticks a lot of boxes".

But it's not as simple as that, of course. Any move will have to be driven from Bale's side, one would think, as he won't be short of offers. Cardiff will hope that the draw of being closer to home, in Wales where he is adored, will be a big pull for him.

In terms of sentiment, though, Southampton has its own pull, given he joined the south coast club at the age of nine. Now, Italian outlet Calciomercato claim the Saints are "on his trail" ahead of a summer switch.

Bale has also been linked with Tottenham and Newcastle, as well as Cardiff City, of course.

Giles to be given Wolves shot in pre-season

Ryan Giles is set to be given a shot to impress Bruno Lage at Wolves this pre-season as the former Bluebirds loanee looks to force his way into the first-team reckoning.

We understand that Cardiff appear resigned to the fact they will miss out on Giles this summer, with Wolves seemingly planning on sending him on loan to another Premier League outfit. Giles was a standout for Cardiff before he was recalled by his parent club in January, however he enjoyed less success at Blackburn Rovers in the back half of the campaign.

What happens next is still up in the air, but according to our sister title BirminghamLive, "Ryan Giles set to take part in pre-season after a successful campaign in the Championship."

Should he impress, he might even get a shot at playing for the Molineux club in the top flight next term, let alone head out on loan.

Rowett issues Wallace update

Millwall boss Gary Rowett has weighed in on speculation surrounding his star player, Jed Wallace.

Last month the Bluebirds were linked with the 27-year-old wide man, who is out of contract at The Den in June. Morison and Wallace are close friends owing to their time together at Millwall.

"I would sign Jed Wallace in a heartbeat!" Morison said last month. "But I’m sure Millwall don’t want to let him go. They will do everything they can to keep him. If he does leave as a free transfer in the summer, he is 27, top of the assists, Millwall’s best player.

"There won’t be a team in the Championship or, I presume, the lower end of the Premier League, who won’t want to take him. There will always be an offer on the table for Jed, it will just be a lot less than what he’d be offered elsewhere!

"It’s not a conversation we’ve had. We have many a conversation every now and then when he wants advice or a chat, but we haven’t spoken about him coming to Cardiff unfortunately."

West Brom have recently been linked with Wallace, too, and Rowett has given his stance on the winger's transfer situation.

“When Steve Bruce is Matt Smith’s father-in-law, I think you can definitely imagine that Smudge has told Steve, although I’m sure he doesn’t need it, just how good a character the player is,” Rowett told the South London Press.

“We’re going to get all these links until Jed puts pen to paper somewhere, or here. That’s going to be ongoing until it happens. And realistically whoever it is is – West Brom, Besiktas, Forest – you are going to see these links. At some point Jed is going to make a decision to do whatever he wants to do. I’m pretty sure he’ll inform us whether that is re-signing for us or signing for someone else.

“I’ll be really honest, that’s sort of out of our control to a certain degree. We’ve spoken to Jed and told him how highly we value him. He’s really going to have to make that decision now, I don’t think there is much point us pestering him all summer to see what he is doing.

“We have to move forward with our plans and hope he decides that he wants to fit in with our plans also.”

Ex-Cardiff favourite set for medical

Former Cardiff City fans' favourite David Marshall is set for yet another transfer as he appears to be closing in on a move to Scottish clubs Hibs.

The 37-year-old is a free agent after leaving QPR following a short stint in west London. According to the BBC, he had signed a pre-contract agreement to move to the Edinburgh club, but the deal needed to be ratified by new manager Lee Johnson, who arrived last week.

Marshall played almost 300 games for the Bluebirds during his stint between 2009 and 2016, winning the club's Player of the Season award back in 2014.

The BBC report Marshall's medical took place at Hibs on Monday.

Bluebirds' Allsop stance

Cardiff City are not in talks to sign Derby County goalkeeper Ryan Allsop, WalesOnline has been told.

The Bluebirds took an interest in the player when they were lining up a replacement for Alex Smithies, who leaves Cardiff following the expiration of his contract next month, with the Rams shot stopper drawn up on a short list in recent months.

However, Cardiff zeroed in on another target they really wanted to bring to the Welsh capital in the form of Jak Alnwick, who has signed for the Bluebirds with his contract at St Mirren finishing next month. They identified Alnwick's skills not only as a goalkeeper but with the ball at his feet as key attributes which will play into Steve Morison's hands next term as he looks to mould his team into his own vision this summer.

The fact the Allsop reports were dredged up again at the weekend appeared to throw shades of uncertainty from some supporters over Dillon Phillips' future at the club.

However, a source at Cardiff has told WalesOnline "Dillon isn't going anywhere", thus finally putting to bed those burgeoning rumours of the 26-year-old's potential departure.
