Here are your Cardiff City headlines for Tuesday, January 10.
Barnsley boss excited by Watters' 'express pace'
Barnsley boss Michael Duff is excited by what loan signing Max Watters can bring the League One side in the coming months.
Striker Watters has signed on loan from Cardiff until the end of the season after a disappointing first half of the campaign. However, he has done it in League One before, scoring six goals in 13 games for MK Dons last season.
And Duff hopes Watters' "express pace" can be the catalyst for Barnsley, who currently sit in the play-off places, as they seek promotion back to the Championship.
“He’s still young with something to prove. He stretches the back four, constantly looks to get in behind and he has express pace," Duff said of the 23-year-old.
“He has been out for a month with a hamstring injury and has had some illness, so we need to get him up to full speed.
“Max wanted to wait a couple of weeks to get himself fully fit but we said ‘get in the building, learn our environment and we can build your minutes.’”
West Brom could cut £8m flop Zohore's contract short
West Brom could reportedly cut Kenneth Zohore's contract short amid interest in the striker from his native Denmark.
Zohore left Cardiff in the summer of 2019 after the Baggies tabled a whopping £8m for the striker, which the Bluebirds simply could not refuse.
However, The Hawthorns has been a veritable hellscape for the forward, who has scored five goals in just 23 appearances for the Midlands club in three-and-a-half years.
The 28-year-old is yet to kick a ball in anger for West Brom's first team this term and reports suggest Zohore's time in English football could be up as soon as this month.
Losing McGuinness would be 'massive blow' to Sheffield Wednesday
Losing Mark McGuinness back to Cardiff this month would be a "massive blow" to Sheffield Wednesday but they could go for a permanent transfer in the summer, according to former Owls midfielder Carlton Palmer.
Cardiff want to bring the defender back from his loan at Hillsborough this month, but manager Mark Hudson has admitted the transfer embargo under which Cardiff City have been placed could decide whether they are able to recall him.
The club have learned in recent days that the transfer embargo, which has been placed on them both by FIFA and the English Football League, will play its part in the McGuinness decision.
All seems to be coming to a head this week, but Palmer believes if a deal is sanctioned for him to return to his parent club, it would be a big blow to Owls boss Darren Moore and the League One club's promotion hopes.
“It’s going to be a massive blow for Darren, it really is," Palmer told Football League World. “This January is going to be a very important month for Darren, in terms of what he’s able to bring in and what he’s able to keep.
“It says something when you get voted Player the Month for November and December, and he’s already well on the way to getting that in January.
“It looks almost certain that Mark’s played his last game for Sheffield Wednesday and that’s a massive blow.
“But now, I would have thought that Sheffield Wednesday are starting to, without getting too ahead of themselves, I’m sure Darren and the chairman are already talking about next season.
“So it might just be the case that that they go for McGuinness now on a permanent transfer in this window.”
Harris and Colwill pay tribute after Bale retires
Bluebirds duo Mark Harris and Rubin Colwill have paid tribute to their former Wales team-mate Gareth Bale after he announced his retirement.
Bale, who earned 111 caps for his country and scored 41 goals, announced his retirement from all football with immediate effect in a bombshell statement on Monday, which you can read here.
Current Bluebirds Mark Harris and Rubin Colwill, who were on the plane out to Qatar with Bale, have issued short but sweet statements on social media to congratulate the Welsh icon on a quite simply stunning career.
"Absolute pleasure to play with. Legend," wrote Harris.
While Colwill added: "Pleasure to share the pitch with this legend of the game."
Ex-Bluebirds defender could make debut against Cardiff
Wigan have signed former Cardiff defender Steven Caulker on a short-term deal and he could make his debut at his old stomping ground this weekend.
The 31-year-old, who started his career in the Tottenham academy and has vast Premier League experience - counting Spurs, QPR, Cardiff and Liverpool among his former clubs - has agreed a contract with the Championship strugglers until the end of the season.
A statement on the Wigan website read: "Wigan Athletic is delighted to confirm the signing of Sierra Leone international captain Steven Caulker on a deal until the end of the 2022/23 season.
"Caulker, 31, will link up with Kolo Toure's side until the end of the 2022/23 Championship campaign, adding a wealth of top-flight and international experience to the squad."
Caulker was called up by England in 2012 and made one full international appearance for the national team before switching allegiance to Sierra Leone in October 2021.
He played for Turkish top-flight side Fatih Karagumruk last summer before returning to England and will wear the number 29 shirt at the DW Stadium.
The centre-back could make his Latics bow against the Bluebirds in a crucial clash this Saturday afternoon.
