Cardiff City transfer news as Bluebirds to battle Swansea City for experienced striker and O'Dowda chase heats up

Here's your round-up of all the latest Cardiff City headlines for Tuesday, May 17.

Cardiff to battle Swans for Austin

Cardiff City are reportedly set to go head to head with south Wales rivals Swansea City for striker Charlie Austin.

According to Football League World, both clubs have already held talks with the 32-year-old, who's set to become a free agent when his contract at Queens Park Rangers expires this summer. However, the same report claims the player himself is also pondering a potential move to MLS.

Austin netted 61 goals in 147 appearances for the R's, and will likely be a name who still appeals in the second tier, although he was seemingly a bit-part player towards the end of this time at Loftus Road.

Cardiff are likely to be in the market for a striker this summer, with January loanees Jordan Hugill and Uche Ikpeazu returning to their respective parent clubs. It's also believed the club could well be willing to listen to offers for Irishman James Collins.

Bluebirds facing competition for O'Dowda

Cardiff City are keen on a move for free agent Callum O'Dowda, but face stern competition for his signature.

The 27-year-old was released by Bristol City on Monday, bringing an end to his six-year association with the Robins.

As first reported by our colleagues at BristolLive, WalesOnline understands the Bluebirds are indeed keen on a move for the Irishman, but face competition from as many as seven other clubs.

BirminghamLive have since claimed that Birmingham City are one of those interested parties, with O'Dowda expected to make a decision on his future next week.

Reports across the Severn claim the winger was informed back in April that the club would not be activating the option to extend his current deal by a further 12 months.

Cardiff target confirms departure

Jak Alnwick has bid an emotional farewell to fans after confirming that he's leaving St Mirren.

Alnwick is expected to confirm a move to Cardiff City soon. Indeed, he could well be unveiled as a City player in the coming days, becoming Steve Morison's second signing of the summer.

Confirming his departure on social media, the former Newcastle United and Rangers keeper posted: "St Mirren what can I say, two years has gone already and that will be my last game for the club.

"What a way to finish, four clean sheets in a row and to captain the club.

"Thank you to everyone associated with the club, you've made the last two years unforgettable for me.

"I wish the club the best of luck in the future."
