Cardiff City stars are 'bouncing off' goalscorer Callum Robinson as Mark Hudson hails brilliant travelling fans after Wigan win

Mark Hudson praised his Cardiff City side for the unity they showed during their 3-1 win over Wigan Athletic.

The Bluebirds thrashed the Latics in their own back yard thanks to goals from Callum Robinson, Sheyi Ojo and Ryan Wintle, producing a fine away performance at the DW Stadium.

The squad seems to have a skip in its step at the minute after securing seven points from their last three games and interim boss Hudson believes that has been the key to their recent success.

"The togetherness, the intensity again, to show grit and determination away from home... you can only put a plan together that makes a team feel comfortable going into a game and make them feel confident to carry that out," Hudson said after the win at Wigan.

"It shows that when we lose Callum in the first half, people are confident to come on and carry out that plan whether they've started or not. It's a really good week. I told them on Tuesday night what to expect straight away, try to switch their focus to the game and that's all we can do."

Robinson has transformed this Cardiff forward line. City have scored eight goals in the five games in which he has started, compared to four goals in the previous eight. He was clinical once again at Wigan, dispatching his first chance of the match in emphatic fashion, but was unfortunately taken off before half-time through injury.

Cardiff will hope it's not serious, though, as he has really added some quality to this team.

"The injury, I think he got caught from behind just on the knee, swelled up straight away," Hudson said. "He tried to run it off and he did last a bit longer than we initially thought. We will have to review that, hopefully that settles.

"He's been brilliant since he's come in. The lads bounce off him. He has experience at this level. The team looked together today."

Another bright performer was Niels Nkounkou, whose individual brilliance helped set up City's first two goals. Hudson believes Cardiff can eke even more out of him in that department going forward.

"He drives with the ball well, he is enthusiastic, a great kid to have about," the interim boss added. "Those moments, I think we can get more from him with them. He is learning the game all the time."

Cardiff took more than 1,200 fans up to Wigan amid rail strikes. They sang their hearts out all afternoon and Hudson and his team gave them a huge round of applause.

"It's been a really tough week," Hudson said. "Testament to the players, they have shown their support to the fans who have travelled all this way to watch them get the three points. We have got to go again. Yes, we can enjoy the seven points, but we've got to switch our minds on to next Saturday, because it comes thick and fast after that.

"The fans were brilliant. Train strikes, trying to get here, they managed to get up here to support them. It's good we show them something, which we did, applauding them like we did."

Cardiff City next host Coventry on Saturday, October 15 (3pm kick-off).
