Cardiff City will be playing Championship football next season after Reading's 1-1 draw with Wigan secured the Bluebirds' safety.
The result at Select Car Leasing Stadium means Cardiff have avoided demotion to League One with two games to spare. Wigan, (24th), Blackpool (23rd) and Reading (22nd) can now no longer catch them. The Latics are relegated.
The three points City secured late on at Rotherham United on Thursday proved crucial.
The 2022/23 campaign has been one of constant worry and upheaval in the capital and although few will look back on the term fondly, safety can be marked as a significant achievement - namely because the alternative would have meant disaster for the club.
Cardiff entertain Huddersfield Town at Cardiff City Stadium tomorrow in their penultimate game of the season, before a trip to champions Burnley at Turf Moor.
Attentions will quickly turn to the future of boss Sabri Lamouchi, who has fulfilled the brief set out to him at the start of his tenure.
Speaking ahead of the clash with the Terriers, the Frenchman said he was keen to remain in south Wales and has already begun looking ahead to the future.
Asked if he expected to still be at the club next season, he replied: "Why not? Everything is open. I was here for the mission. The mission is almost done and I'm happy to be the manager of Cardiff City Football Club.
"So now there's a desire to put something together.
"I've not spoken to the owners yet. I'm just focused on the Huddersfield game. I want to finish with a win - for my players first because they deserve absolutely the win, and of course for the fans.
"To be the manager of this club is something important for me, and we need to respect that and just focus on this game."
With safety now confirmed, one suspects those conversations will happen sooner rather than later.
