Cardiff City player ratings at Sunderland as defender puts on masterclass and Aston Villa man shines again

Cardiff City bounced back from a midweek defeat to Watford to claim a 1-0 win away at Sunderland.

Here's how the Bluebirds players rated:

Ryan Allsop 7

Made a couple of really decent saves late on in the match after having very little to do in the first hour or so.

Mahlon Romeo 7

A mixed outing. Did some things really well but his play was also littered with inaccuracies. Kept finding Sunderland defenders with crosses and shots early on but then it was his pass which led to Harris' goal.

Perry Ng 9 (star man)

A masterclass at the back. Intercepted everything, made a goal-saving intervention from Amad Diallo's shot and his distribution was fantastic.

Cedric Kipre 8

Solid performance. Had one moment when a heavy touch caught him out, but otherwise very solid at both ends of the pitch.

Niels Nkounkou 7

One of those days where everything worked out for him. When Cardiff are in the ascendancy he looks some player. Played a world-class ball for Philogene in the first half and was a nuisance down City's left.

Ryan Wintle 6

Actually a little sloppy compared to his usual high standards. Amad got past him for one dangerous shot. Improved as game went on.

Joe Ralls 7

Missed that early penalty chance but apart from that he was a much-needed presence in the midfield. Good on the ball and broke up play well.

Callum O'Dowda 7

Was a key component of Cardiff's excellent press from the front in the first hour. Was always an outlet for the defence and goalkeeper, too.

Sheyi Ojo 6

Did so many things right and then he can make you watch through your fingers. Showed endeavour to get in great positions and create chances, but also sloppy.

Jaden Philogene 8

Another fantastic outing for the Villa man. Created chances for himself and others and was a nightmare to defend against. Sunderland must have been delighted when he was pulled on the hour mark.

Mark Harris 7

Took his chance really well after missing a 1v1 in the first half. Led the pressing at the front well. Another who came off on the hour after taking a knock.

Subs

Max Watters (Harris 58) 5 - Never got into the game and miscontrolled balls which were played into him. Taken off in injury time.

Romaine Sawyers (Philogene 72) 6 - Sunderland players played around him a little bit after his introduction but did well late on to set up Ralls for a chance.

Curtis Nelson (Ojo 72) 8 - Made two important interventions in quick succession to keep Sunderland out.

Andy Rinomhota (O'Dowda 72) 7 - Was in the right place more than once after being brought on.

Gavin Whyte (Watters 90) N/A.
