Cardiff City news as Rotherham United debacle branded a 'double blow' for Bluebirds and Mark Harris gets Wales call

Here are your Cardiff City headlines for Tuesday, March 21.

Pundits brand Rotherham postponement 'double blow' for Bluebirds

Former Leeds United, Crystal Palace and QPR midfielder Shaun Derry has branded the postponement of the match against Rotherham United a "double blow" for the Bluebirds.

The Bluebirds had taken a 1-0 lead into the break after Jaden Philogene's well-taken early strike, but a monumental downpour during the interval rendered the pitch unplayable.

Sabri Lamouchi's side will likely have to go back to the New York Stadium and replay the match in some capacity, but having dominated the first half, Derry believes it's a big loss for Cardiff.

"[Lamouchi] would have been delighted by the first-half showing. I mean, the highlights suggested they were completely on top as we see Jaden Philogene's finish there," Derry, who was recently the manager of Cambridge United, said on ITV's EFL Highlights Show.

"But it's kind of a double blow, this, you've gone in half-time 1-0, you're talking about the second half and a continuation of a brilliant performance, and then not only can you not finish that game, you've got to make that huge travel back to Cardiff and you've got to play the game again at some point.

"Then you look at some of the teams in and around you and realise they've picked up points. It's a big, big loss for Cardiff."

Alongside Derry in the studio was Jamie Mackie, formerly of QPR and Nottingham Forest, who believes it will be tough for Cardiff to go back up to Yorkshire and repeat what was such a dominant display until the game was postponed.

"We were watching it unfold and from a Rotherham perspective, even though they were at home, being 1-0 down in the game, it was a better game to be called off for them," Mackie said.

"We saw Lamouchi on the pitch rolling the ball, I think he might have gone in for a slide tackle to see if it was all right! He was trying everything to get the game on. The Cardiff fans weren't happy because they were so on top.

"The psychology of it, going back up there, after being 1-0 up, it's very hard to go and repeat that first-half performance."

Evans named in TOTW

Kieron Evans was named in the Vanarama National League's Team of the Week for his performance for Torquay United against Gateshead at the weekend.

Evans, 21, found himself on the scoresheet in the 1-1 draw, netting for the second time in as many matches after notching in the 2-1 defeat by Wealdstone in the previous game.

The Wales youth international took his goal expertly as he chested down and volleyed from the edge of the area into the bottom corner late in the second half to secure a crucial point for the Devon club.

Evans, whose contract at Cardiff currently expires at the end of the campaign, has seriously impressed in the fifth tier and it will be interesting to see what happens with him in the coming months.

International call-ups

Bluebirds striker Mark Harris has today been called up to the Wales squad for the upcoming internationals against Croatia and Latvia.

Harris had originally been omitted from Rob Page's squad, however the FAW announced today that Brennan Johnson will be assessed ahead of the two matches, with Harris and Swansea City's Liam Cullen called up as back-up.

Elsewhere, Romaine Sawyers has been included in St Kitts and Nevis' squad for their upcoming international matches.

The Sugar Boyz have Concacaf Nations League matches against French St. Martin and Aruba on March 23rd and 27th respectively.

Sawyers, who has been in excellent form for the Bluebirds of late, has 31 caps to his name and will hope to add to that total over the coming days.

Dan Barton, the City academy goalkeeper, has also today been called up to the Wales under-19s squad.

Bluebirds legend on Rotherham debacle

Bluebirds legend Nathan Blake understands the fans' frustrations at Rotherham but believes it would have been nigh-on impossible to get the game back on following the "deluge" of rain which poured down during half-time.

City supporters were furious by the seeming lack of urgency to clear the surface water, but while Blake understands that viewpoint, he believes the outcome would have been the same regardless.

"There wasn't much that could've been done in fairness, but the sprinklers came on. There's no way they knew the rain was going to come down like it did," he told the BBC.

"Obviously it looks bad during the rain with the sprinklers on and one of the ground staff - pushing water off and pulling it back on. But it was a real deluge - the rest of the pitch was under water so it would've been difficult to play the game, the ball wasn't going to roll or anything like that.

"I think the frustration for the Cardiff fans was probably the fact that for 15 to 20 minutes no one came out and tried to do anything at all about the pitch and then when they did one guy came out and then the second then the third.

"Then one guy with a fork trying to relieve some of the flooding but it was never going to happen, it was just one of those things - mother nature. It couldn't be helped.

"Rotherham were far happier to have the game abandoned than Cardiff - Cardiff were trying to get it on and Rotherham were happy for it to be abandoned.

"Rotherham were happy because they had three or four of their main players out also, so everything was good for them to have the game abandoned but not so good for Cardiff in fairness. I would've thought that there would definitely be a replay for sure and Cardiff will be disappointed but they can still go there and win.

"But like I said, it was one of those situations where there was a long way to go for an abandoned game and things happen from time to time."

Forest defender on trial

Nottingham Forest defender Osa Solomon is on trial with Cardiff City this week, WalesOnline has learned.

The 19-year-old is out of contract at the Premier League club next term and the Bluebirds are keen to cast an eye over the right-back with a view to supplementing their under-21s squad next season.

Solomon, who was born in Lusk, Ireland, to a Nigerian father and South African mother, so qualifies for all three at international level, reported at Cardiff on Tuesday. The youngster operates primarily on the right-hand side of defence but can also play in the middle, too.

We understand that Solomon's link to Forest is purely coincidental and he is not a player who has been earmarked by Bluebirds first-team manager Sabri Lamouchi.

Instead, he is a player who has been sought out by the club's recruitment team as they begin to plan ahead for next season. We understand that more youth-team trialists are pencilled in for the coming weeks.

The trial is with a view to signing the Forest youngster on a free in the summer, should he catch the eye, with the defender understood to be leaving the City Ground at the end of the current campaign.

Cardiff are hosting a behind-closed-doors friendly match in the coming days in which Solomon will be handed the chance to impress. It is understood Solomon won't be the only trialist to play for the Bluebirds in that match.
