Cardiff City news as Romaine Sawyers dubs Bluebirds fans 'incredible' and Morison steps up striker hunt amid Carroll links

Here are the Bluebirds headlines for Sunday July 31 as Cardiff fans still bask in their opening day win over Norwich.

Sawyers dubs Bluebirds fans 'incredible'

Cardiff City matchwinner Romaine Sawyers has described his first experience of Bluebirds fans as 'incredible'.

The Bluebirds' new playmaker struck the winning goal in the opening day triumph over Norwich and admits he was bowled over by the Cardiff City Stadium factor.

Cardiff fans and players created great energy together in what for many supporters was their best experience watching their team for years.

It left Sawyers telling the club's official website afterwards: "The atmosphere was incredible. Coming off the bus lots of people were there clapping. It helps us give extra fight. If we perform like that I'm sure sure they'll be happy.

"They can't expect us to be perfection, but provided we have the right ethos, mentality and are willing to do it, I'm sure they'll accept that. We showed great resilience, proved that without the ball we can be good."

That resolute attitude came across during the second-half flashpoint when a number of Cardiff players, plus Norwich skipper Grant Hanley, were booked.

"Times like that are going to be a bit frantic, but if we keep our calmness our quality will come through. We wont be a pushover. The manager has stature, he's a big guy, and we echoed that in the team," continued Sawyers.

As for his winning goal from distance, Sawyers smiled: "From when I hit it, to when it hit back of net, it was almost like a slow mo moment. I kind of froze, wait, has it gone in?"

Smith questions Sawyers goal

Beaten Norwich boss Dean Smith feels Romaine Sawyers' winning goal was a fluke.

Smith and Sawyers have worked together previously and the Canaries chief claimed: "I know Romaine very well and that certainly wasn't a shot - that was a pass that got deflected in."

Of the game itself, he said: "We didn't deserve to come away with nothing. It wasn't a great game in terms of chances. Their xG (expected goals) is probably 0.04.

"But we weren't good enough in the final third. Our final ball wasn't quite right, our delivery or pass wasn't quite right.

It was an emotional atmosphere here, you could see that and you could see from their bench how emotional they were."

Morison steps up striker hunt amid Carroll links

Cardiff boss Steve Morison will this week step up his bid to land two new strikers.

The Bluebirds lacked a cutting edge in the final third versus Norwich and Morison is looking to get one new goal ace on loan and another potentially on a permanent deal.

Various targets have been approached and the Cardiff manager is waiting on responses from those men and their clubs.

Bluebirds legend Nathan Blake claims the Bluebirds are closing in on a pay-as-you-play deal for former Liverpool and Newcastle man Andy Carroll.

The 33-year-old is a free agent after leaving West Brom earlier this summer, having previously been with Reading on a short-term deal.

Speaking on BBC Radio Wales after the win over Norwich , Blake said: "My birdies tell me, I heard that there could be a new signing in Andy Carroll as a striker. Pay as you play. That's what I'm hearing.

"I cant tell you who my source is. It's a very good source."

However, it appears the suggestion of a deal being done for Carroll are being downplayed by others. So it's a wait and see on this one.

Ramsey set to move abroad

Former Cardiff star Aaron Ramsey could follow Gareth Bale to America, according to new reports.

The Mail reckon the Wales midfield ace is weighing up offers from French club Nice and MLS side Charlotte and will make a decision on his future shortly.

It is claimed Charlotte have offered to make the 31-year-old their best paid player on a two year deal. Ramsey had his Juventus contract terminated last week.

Tomlin's shocking start

Former Cardiff idol Lee Tomlin had an awful debut for new club Doncaster as he was sent off for two embarrassing yellow cards in the space just 17 seconds.

It was a sequence of events that saw Tomlin branded "stupid".

Tomlin was initially booked for refusing to get out of the way of a Bradford City free-kick. Then, he did the same again, cheekily kicking the ball away as Bradford attempted to take another set-piece.

There followed a comical moment as Tomlin proceeded to theatrically throw himself to the ground when confronted by an opponent. He was swiftly issued with another yellow card as he lay on the turf, throwing his arms in the air as his own team-mates put their heads in their hands.

One fan wrote on social media: "The most stupid red card you’ll see, courtesy of Lee Tomlin."

Tomlin, 33, was making his debut after leaving Walsall at the end of last season. He left the Bluebirds by mutual consent in October last year.
