Cardiff City legend Danny Gabbidon slams club as 'directionless' with an absent owner

Bluebirds legend and former caretaker manager Danny Gabbidon has branded the club "directionless" and criticised Vincent Tan's continued absence amid the current malaise at Cardiff City.

The Bluebirds find themselves in a state of inertia, with Mark Hudson having been in caretaker charge for more than a month now but with the club two places further down the table than when Steve Morison was given the sack.

After three defeats in a row, there is palpable unrest among the supporters and results need to turn on their head quickly before the World Cup break.

And, speaking on the latest episode of the BBC's Feast of Football podcast, Gabbidon said: "Cardiff City are a team with no real direction, I would say. Caretaker manager in charge in Mark Hudson, trying to improve the style of football, which has got better, but there's still a long way to go with that.

"They don't even have a proper manager at the minute and there's no sign of that happening at the minute. Is it Mark Hudson? No one has said anything. The club has come out and said they are not actively looking for a manager, which I find strange. It's all still in limbo."

Cardiff's inaction has seen more supporters expressing concern about the ownership, with Tan having not been seen since the Bluebirds were in the Premier League. Reports of Tan wanting to sell the club also resurfaced earlier this year in the national press.

The Bluebirds have enjoyed undoubted periods of success with Tan at the helm, including two promotions to the Premier League. But since the last relegation from the top flight, Cardiff have finished in a worse league position year on year.

And speaking about Tan, Gabbidon added: "The 'Tan Out' shout has been happening for a long time. Maybe it happens more after a result like that (the South Wales derby defeat). But it's something large sections of the fan base have been saying for a while because they haven't seen any direction with the club.

"They have seen an owner who has stopped putting money in. An owner that's stopped turning up or coming to games. Maybe stopped caring. He has got lots of other business interests and clubs he looks after.

"When he first came in he put a lot of money into the club, maybe too much, and maybe he got his fingers burnt a fair bit. Now you are seeing the complete opposite where they are stripping stuff away. They are reducing the budget. They are letting players go that are on big wages. It just doesn't seem like there is a real interest from him anymore. When fans see that, obviously they get frustrated with it.

"At Cardiff City, the manager needs to be sorted out. Whether you give it to Hudson or whether you bring someone in... if you have got this idea of wanting to change the philosophy or play better football, you have to get a manager in who is good at doing that. Like Russell Martin is (at Swansea)."
