Cardiff City have condemned the racist abuse on social that marred their sensational 2-1 win over Rotherham United on Thursday night, and say they are offering support to players affected.
Rotherham released a statement shortly after the game confirming they had opened an investigation having been made aware of several offensive posts towards Cardiff players on social media in the wake of the clash at the New York Stadium.
It is reported match-winner Cedric Kipre and Cardiff coach Sol Bamba were both targeted.
A spokesperson said: "A number of social media posts were brought to the club's attention in the immediate aftermath of the game at AESSEAL New York Stadium, and Rotherham United are now seeking to identify the individual in question and will work alongside South Yorkshire Police to bring the perpetrator to justice.
"Rotherham United totally condemns the actions of the aforementioned individual and would like to firmly reiterate our zero-tolerance policy towards racism or discrimination of any kind.
"The club will take necessary steps to ensure that it is clear that the actions of the individual in question are in no way representative of our football club and supporters.
"The club totally and completely dissociates itself from the actions of this individual and the abhorrent behaviour that they have displayed and will take the necessary measures to ensure that this isolated incident does not tarnish the reputation of Rotherham United and our fan base."
Cardiff have welcomed Rotherham's response, and say they too are in contact with authorities over the incident.
A Cardiff statement read: "We’ve seen the appalling racist abuse posted on Twitter following last night’s game and are in contact with the police and Rotherham United. We welcome Rotherham United’s strong and immediate public condemnation and their forthcoming investigation in conjunction with the relevant authorities.
"We are supporting our players through this and hope that the strongest level of action will always be taken against any individual found guilty of perpetuating hate in our sport."
