Cardiff City headlines as Sunderland interest in Flint gathers pace and Everton move for Rooney could wreck Derby bid to overhaul Bluebirds

Here's your round-up of all the latest Cardiff City headlines for Sunday, January 16.

Sunderland weigh up move for Flint

Speculation linking Aden Flint with a move to League One promotion chasers Sunderland has continued to gather pace.

The Sun on Sunday claim Sunderland are now weighing up a move for the centre-back, who has been a regular for Cardiff this season.

The 32-year-old has made 23 appearances for the Bluebirds this term and is believed to have an admirer in Black Cats boss Lee Johnson, who worked with the centre-back at Bristol City.

Sunderland are likely to be keen on strengthening this month, having seen their bid to get back into the Championship dealt a further setback with a disappointing draw at Accrington Stanley.

Flint is one of several Cardiff stars out of contract in the summer and the chance to cash in could well be seen as an attractive option as Steve Morison looks to rebuild his squad.

Should the defender make the move to Wearside, it will likely do little to extinguish links with Jonathan Panzo's name in the capital.

Interest in the defender has been categorically denied by club insiders, but Panzo nevertheless continues to be mentioned as a possibility for the Bluebirds by others.

Sources claim that while a move isn't on the cards at present, Cardiff are nevertheless keeping a close eye on the youngster's situation.

Morison keen on more additions as Doyle move edges near

Cardiff boss Steve Morison says he'd like at least two more new faces before the close of the window.

The club are understood to be edging closer towards completing a loan move for Manchester City midfielder Tommy Doyle, having already snapped up Leeds United youngster Cody Drameh.

Drameh made his Cardiff debut in the defeat to Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, and Morison is hopeful of bringing more players on board before the end of the month.

Asked after the defeat to Rovers, how many more he'd like, he replied: "Another two or three. I think the boys need help.

"We need to be better in the final third. Like I said to the players in there, don't make me go out and get someone for that final third from elsewhere."

Derby's bid to overtake Bluebirds could be rocked by Everton

Derby County boss Wayne Rooney is reportedly among the early contenders to replace Rafa Benitez at Everton.

Benitez was relieved of his duties at Goodison Park following the 2-1 defeat to Norwich on Saturday, a result that leaves the Toffees just six points clear of the relegation zone.

Rooney, who came through the ranks at Everton as a player, has worked wonders with Derby.

They are unbeaten in five games following Saturday's win over Sheffield United.

Despite being deducted 21 points at the beginning of the season, under Rooney Derby have hauled themselves to within eight points of moving out of the relegation spots, with Cardiff one of several teams likely to be in the crosshairs of their survival bid.

Losing Rooney would undoubtedly be a blow, and Sky Sports believe that Everton may well decide to make a move for their former striker to bring him back to Merseyside.

Other teams Derby are seeking to overhaul include Reading, Hull and Peterborough, as well as Steve Morison's Bluebirds.

Cardiff have a huge home fixture with Derby looming on March 1.

Rabbi's love for Bluebirds still going strong

Rabbi Matondo is enjoying his time out in Belgium, but admits he'll always love hometown club Cardiff.

The 21-year-old left his boyhood club for Manchester City as a teenager in 2016, before going on to complete a big money move to Schalke in 2019.

A loan spell at Stoke followed, with Matondo now plying his trade on loan at Cercle Brugge, where he has become one of the hottest properties in Belgian football.

But it seems he still has more than a soft spot for his former team, with many of his former team-mates clearly still on speed dial.

"I still speak to some of the boys I came through with," he told WalesOnline. "Isaak Davies, Rubin Colwill, Sam Bowen. I like to keep tabs on them, and the team.

"It's a club that obviously still has a large space in my heart. It always will do. It's where I grew up and I have a lot of love for the city. I'll always keep tabs on them, and I'll always want the best for them. It's been a difficult season, so I just hope things improve quickly."
