Cardiff City manager Steve Moison is hoping Jamilu Collins’ knee injury doesn’t rule him out of the Severnside Derby against Bristol City after the left-back left their 0-0 draw with West Brom in the ninth minute.
Collins has been one of the standout performers for the Bluebirds this season, to the point Morison has declared that the Nigerian is the “best left-back in the league” but Cardiff now face an anxious wait to see if he’ll be available for Sunday’s clash at Ashton Gate.
The 28-year-old moved to south Wales this summer from German club Paderborn and had featured in every minute of the campaign so far before his injury on Wednesday night.
"We don't know at the minute, in all honesty," Morison told Wales Online. "He will be assessed in the coming days. With all the will in the world, let's hope it is just that he's in really bad pain at the minute and it's not what we suspect it might be.
"I said to the lads at half-time, 'If you're going to put your bodies on the line for anyone, go and do it for him', because he has been the best left-back in the league so far."
Collins was replaced at the Hawthorns by former City winger Callum O’Dowda who slotted into left-back and delivered a strong performance continuing his bright start to life at his new club. Cardiff also have academy full-back Joel Bagan as another option on that side of the defence.
"He (O'Dowda) was fantastic and now it's an opportunity for Joel," Morison added.
Sunday could witness a duel between O’Dowda and new City signing Kane Wilson who could make his full Championship debut for the Robins at right wing-back following Mark Sykes’ red card against Luton Town on Tuesday night.
Wilson was City’s first-choice throughout pre-season but an injury sustained before their final friendly of the summer against Bournemouth meant he lost his place to Sykes and has made just two substitute appearances in the league and a start against Coventry City in the Carabao Cup.
