Cardiff City double defender signing raises questions over Leeds United full-back Cody Drameh's future

An extension to Leeds United full-back Cody Drameh's Cardiff City loan looks to be off the cards after the Championship side announced the signing of two new defenders.

While Drameh impressed during his loan spell in Wales, the Bluebirds recently signed Mahlon Romeo and Vontae Daley-Campbell from Millwall and Leicester City who can both play right-back. Drameh left Leeds in January in the search of first team football after he played just three times for the Whites during the first half of the season.

While Marcelo Bielsa wanted to keep Drameh at Elland Road due to their first team injuries, the former Leeds boss opted to send the full-back out on loan so he could gain some experience.

Upon his arrival at Cardiff, the 20-year-old took like a duck to water in the Championship, putting in a string of impressive performances away on loan.

So impressed were Cardiff's fans, they chanted "Cody Drameh, we want you to stay!" following the Bluebirds final Championship game of the season, which they won 1-0 over Derby County. He even won their in-house player of the season award which is quite a feat given he only arrived in January.

"Trust me, I have asked him to stay!" said Cardiff City boss Steve Morison in the wake of the Bluebirds 1-0 win.

While Morison's comment was rather tongue-in-cheek due to the fact he believes Drameh is ready for the Premier League, Cardiff's double signing has ended the likelihood he will return to Wales.

However, his place at Leeds is not assured either.

Leeds have just signed a new right-back in Rasmus Kristensen from Red Bull Salzburg and still have Luke Ayling on the books. Additionally, Robin Koch finished the season as Leeds' first choice right-back, owed in part to Ayling's suspension following his red card against Arsenal.

That would make Drameh Leeds' fourth choice right-back. So what exactly do the Whites have planned for him?

Drameh is said to have already spoken to Leeds boss Jesse Marsch, with the full-back intending to stake a claim for first team football next season.

While he won't need to be registered for the Leeds' 25-man Premier League squad due to being under 21, the 20-year-old will need to impress Marsch over pre-season if he wants to beat out Kristensen and Ayling. Given Leeds' outlay on Kristensen, and the fact Marsch has previously worked with the Danish international during their time together at Red Bull Salzburg, it would seem likely he will be the Whites first choice right-back next season.

A loan move back to the Championship looks more likely for Drameh next season unless he can outshine his competition.
