Card machines down in shops including Supervalu and Centra as Irish customers rage

Irish customers have been left confused as card machines in shops across the country have stopped working, with some stores only accepting cash payments as they work to resolve the issue.

Supervalu stores throughout Ireland have been experiencing difficulties with their card payment systems, with the issues also affecting their online grocery service.

In a statement on Twitter, Supervalu Ireland said: "Our card payment service provider is currently experiencing technical issues which is affecting the processing of card payments at SuperValu stores as well as online.

"Our provider is working to rectify the issue and to ensure the affected card payment systems will be back working as soon as possible. Customers can pay in cash in stores, as normal, and we apologise to them for any inconvenience caused."

It seems that Supervalu was not the only store facing problems, as earlier today, several other businesses said they too were unable to process card payments.

Centra Ireland tweeted: "Our card payment service provider is currently experiencing technical issues which is affecting the processing of card payments at Centra stores as well as online.

"Our provider is working to rectify the issue and to ensure the affected card payment systems will be back working as soon as possible. Customers can pay in cash in stores, as normal, and we apologise to them for any inconvenience caused."

While another Dublin bookstore said, they had the same problem.

Gutter bookshop said in a tweet: "Anyone else's card machines down?

"Neither of ours connecting to merchant services and declining all sales."

One person took to Twitter to share the news with their followers, saying: "So this sign was at the tills in SuperValu Athlone today it says "All card machines are down due to a nationwide problem with cards"..but you can still use your card at an ATM".

They attached an image of a notice in the Supervalu store in Athlone, which read: "All card Machines are down due to a Nation wide problem with cards.

"ATM are still working.

"Sorry for any inconvenience caused."
