Car totally destroyed as fire spreads to second vehicle in busy car park

A car has been totally destroyed after it burst into flames in a busy retail park in Cardiff. The fire broke out shortly before 12.30pm on Friday outside the Costco store in the Capital Retail Park in the Leckwith area of the city.

Firefighters spent almost an hour at the scene after a black BMW went up in flames as it was surrounded by other cars. While nobody was injured in the blaze it did spread to a white BMW that was parked next to it. You can get the latest WalesOnline newsletters emailed to you directly for free by signing up here.

Images taken at the retail park show the black BMW which originally caught fire totally burnt out while the white BMW next to it suffered substantial damage all along its right-hand side. An area around the two cars was cordoned off while firefighters made the area safe.

A spokeswoman for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called to a vehicle fire outside Costco in Capital Retail Park in Cardiff at 12.29pm. One car was totally destroyed by fire. A crew from Penarth attended the scene and used two hose reel jets and breathing apparatus. There were no injuries reported and the fire crew left the scene at 1.30pm.”
