Car torched in quiet Rutherglen street as police probe deliberate blaze

A motor was torched in a quiet street in Lanarkshire after shocked residents heard a commotion outside.

Residents were woken by a commotion in the residential street after a Volkswagen Golf was found burning on Westmuir Place, Rutherglen, around 12.40am on Wednesday.

Neighbours told how they heard tyres pop as the car burst into flames just meters from their homes.

One resident, who called the fire brigade, told the Daily Record: "I heard a car alarm go off and I looked outside to check it wasn't mine.

"Then I heard bangs like tyres popping and smoke. Sparks started flying everywhere. It was a new motor.

"This is a quiet area and it's concerning to think someone has been setting fires to people's things."

Another neighbour woke up to the sound of emergency services arriving at the scene.

"I was woken by a commotion outside after midnight. I actually thought it was workmen outside but I looked out the window and saw the fire crews.

"I thought there was a house fire at first. There was so much smoke billowing down the street, it was hard to see."

Shocking images of the motor show the extent of damage as numerous windows have been blown out by the blaze.

The front of the car has sustained extensive damage while the inside appears to be charred and covered in debris, with shattered glass lying at the side of the road.

The blaze was extinguished and there were no reports of injuries. Enquiries into the incident remain ongoing.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We received a report of a car on fire on Westmuir Place, Rutherglen around 12.40am on Wednesday, 19 April, 2023.

“The fire was extinguished by the Scottish Fire and Rescue service and there were no reports of any injuries.

“The fire is being treated as wilful and enquiries are ongoing.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson added: "We were alerted at 12.28am on Wednesday, 19 April to reports of a vehicle fire in Rutherglen.

"Operations Control mobilised one fire appliance to the town's Westmuir Place, where firefighters extinguished a fire which had taken hold of a car.

"Crews left the scene after working to make the area safe.

"There were no casualties."
