Car torched in Dundee as police launch major probe

Police have launched a major probe after a car was torched on a Dundee housing estate.

The terrifying incident happened late on Sunday night on the Ballumbie housing estate on the north-east of the city.

Locals described seeing a huge orange glow in Ashkirk Place after the car was targeted late on Sunday night.

Police Scotland confirmed this morning they are treating the fire as ‘wilful’ and said that their enquiries are ongoing.

Residents took to social media to describe the horror unfold shortly before 11pm.

Writing on Facebook one said: “Well we are always saying what a quiet street we live in!! Glad everyone is ok!! scary stuff never ran down stairs so fast

“Honestly it could have been so much worse eh and it happened so quick.”

Another wrote: “Same here, whole house was glowing bright orange - serious incident in this quiet street."

While a third added: “Never seen anything like it, terrifying stuff.”

Other locals were just as shocked at the aftermath.

One commented: “The fact they think it was deliberate is scary given the proximity of other cars and houses!”

And another said: “This is all just getting out of hand now o m g!”

The vehicle was removed on Monday morning and police remained on the scene carrying out door-ro-door enquiries.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers were called to reports of a vehicle fire at around 11.15pm on Sunday April 10.

“It is being treated as wilful and inquiries are ongoing.”

A spokesperson for the fire service said an appliance from the Kingsway Fire Station was dispatched.

They said: “We received a callout at 10.57pm following reports of a vehicle on fire.

“Crews used one breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet at the scene.”
