Car smashes into M57 central reservation in major crash that closed the motorway

A car smashed into the central reservation on the M57 in a major crash that closed the motorway.

Emergency services were called to the incident, close to Junction 2 at Prescot, at around 2.30pm on Friday. Multiple vehicles were involved in the crash that even left one car stopped on the hard shoulder.

Road closures were quickly put in place while police and paramedics dealt with the incident. As a result, traffic delays built up in the area.

Despite the severity of the crash, Merseyside Police told the ECHO that the people involved suffered only minor injuries. One person was taken to hospital for treatment.

In a statement, the force said: "At around 2.30pm today (Friday 1 April) officers were called to a report of a collision involving several vehicles on the M57 Southbound at Junction 2." North West Ambulance service told the ECHO that one person was taken to hospital following the crash.

A video from the scene shows a car crashing into the the central reservation on the M57 while another vehicle has come to a halt on the hard shoulder. The car which hit the central reservation sustained significant damage to its front end.

The crash caused delays of approximately 30 minutes on the M57 Southbound between Junction 2 (Prescot) and J1 (Tarbock Island). A photo from the road showed cars stuck in gridlock while emergency services dealt with the incident.

The road reopened fully just before 4pm, and traffic reportedly returned to normal at around 4.15pm.
