Port Stephens-Hunter police are investigating a single-vehicle crash involving a stolen vehicle in a Maitland suburb, after witnesses allegedly saw two boys - believed to be teenagers - fleeing the scene.

Officers were called to Aberglasslyn Road at Aberglasslyn at about 3.30am on Wednesday, January 10, after reports a Nissan X-trail had crashed.

Witnesses told investigators the Nissan rolled onto its side after it hit a kerb.

Police said witnesses also reported two teenage boys were spotted running from the scene following the incident.

NSW Ambulance paramedics were dispatched, but the Newcastle Herald has been told they were stood down because they were not needed.

Police said checks revealed the Nissan was stolen from a Farley address on Boxing Day night.

A witness said two occupants of the vehicle "punched out the window to escape" the wreck before leaving via Warbler Street.

The noise from the crash woke up many people in neighbouring properties who came out to see the wreckage.

Police are calling for anyone with information that could help with their investigation to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or through the online reporting portal.
