Car headlights could shine warning symbols on roads in replace of dashboard

Car headlights may soon be able to shine symbols on the road which could help drivers with directional prompts and weather-related information.

The new tech could help motorists keep their eye on the road, as the headlights could flag warnings which could be missed if displayed on a dashboard or touchscreen.

According to the RAC, Ford, Mercedes-Benz and Audi are working on this tech and are hoping to get it on the roads in the near future.

Lars Junker, features and software, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, Ford of Europe, said: "What started as playing around with a projector light and a blank wall could take lighting technologies to a whole new level.

"There’s the potential now to do so much more than simply illuminate the road ahead, to help reduce the stress involved in driving at night.

"The driver could get essential information without ever needing to take their eyes off the road."

The smart microchips in the headlights could project directions, speed limits or weather information so that a motorist's gaze can remain fixed on the road ahead.

Ford has even claimed that the tech could project the width of a vehicle to help with parking. They also say that the headlights could show a path for the driver to follow to ensure cyclists are passed at a safe distance.

However, the RAC has warned that there could be issues with the tech as projections could block road conditions, distract other road users, or even overlie another car's projections.

Leading car manufacturers have not set a date for the introduction of the tech as of this time as it is still in testing.
