A man has been rushed to hospital after a car ploughed into an electricity pylon which reportedly caught fire. Emergency services were called to the scene on the A96 near Cairnie, Aberdeenshire, at around 3.35pm on Sunday, October 9, following reports of a one vehicle crash.
Pictures from the scene show the wrecked motor lying on its roof with debris littered across the carriageway following the horror crash. Officers closed the road for around eight hours due to the mangled power lines lying across the busy roadway between Aberdeen and Inverness.
Over 13 postcodes in the surrounding area were left without power while engineers worked to fix the pylon. Amey Scotland said: "The A96 is currently closed in both directions due to a fallen pylon that is currently on fire."
The male motorist, who was able to free himself from the stricken vehicle, was taken to hospital for assessment but his current condition is not known.
Police Scotland have confirmed that he will be reported to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service in connection with alleged road traffic offences.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 3.35pm on Sunday, 9 October, 2022, police were called to the A96 near Cairnie, following a report of a one-car crash.
"One man was taken to hospital for assessment and will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal in connection with road traffic offences.
"The road was closed due to damage to a pylon, reopening around midnight."
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson added: "We were alerted at 3.36pm on Sunday, 9 October to reports of a road traffic collision involving one car which had collided with a power pole unit on the A96 near Ashgrove Filling Station.
"Operations Control mobilised three appliances to the scene. No firefighting was required, however crews worked to make the area safe.
"One male casualty was in the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service."
