It's a sight to make the heart sink of any car owner – probably our second biggest purchase ever going up in flames, leaving a sad and smoking derelict shell of what was once a pride and joy.
South Wales Police's Roads Policing Unit took this shot of the aftermath of a vehicle fire in the dark early hours of Sunday morning, just as their colleagues from South Wales Fire Service had finished extinguishing the flames. The incident happened on the A465 dual carriageway between Aberdulais and Neath.
The road was shut for around an hour while emergency services dealt with the incident.
According to the website fireservice, every year in the UK, more than 100,000 cars – nearly 300 a day – go up in flames. Sadly around 100 people die annually as a result. However, around 65 per cent of car fires are started deliberately to cover criminal activity, to make a fraudulent insurance claim or as an act of vandalism. One in 12 reported stolen vehicles will be burnt out. There is no suggestion that any of the above was case in this instance.
