Car explodes into flames damaging other vehicles in Swansea street

A car has exploded into flames in a suburb plagued by car crime.

Firefighters were called to Rose Hill in Mount Pleasant, Swansea, early on Tuesday morning, where one car was completely destroyed by fire, and two others were damaged.

Police are now investigating the incident.

One local resident said: "I was awoken up by a big bang about 6.50am and a big plume of black smoke. Yet another car fire, not what my nerves can take at the moment. The fire service were amazing though, they sorted it out in no time".

The incident is just the latest involving cars in the Mount Pleasant, Uplands and Brynmill area, with reports of tyres being slashed, cars keyed and wing mirrors being broken off.

One car owner living in Mirador Crescent recently woke up to find a huge key scratch on her new car - causing more than £400 worth of damage.

In 2020, three vehicles were affected by heat after one was torched and completely destroyed at Penlan Crescent in Uplands.

That incident came just weeks after a string of vehicles were targeted by vandals and thieves, who put in windows of cars on Terrace Road - just around the corner of the latest incident in Rose Hill, days after cars were damaged in neighbouring Waun Wen.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said it sent firefighters from Swansea Central Fire Station just before 7am on Tuesday, March 1, to the latest incident.

A spokesman for the service said: "A car was well alight and destroyed by the fire, whilst two neighbouring cars were slightly damaged by the fire.

"Firefighters extinguished the fire using two hose reel jets, two breathing apparatus and a hydrant. The fire service left the incident at 7.50am but reattended the incident to dampen down a reignition of fire. The incident was declared incident over at 9.10am. It is being investigated by the police".

A South Wales Police spokesman added (on Tuesday): "We were called just before 7.15am this morning by Mid and West Wales Fire And Rescue Service following reports of a car being on fire on Rosehill Quarry in Uplands.

"Enquiries are ongoing to ascertain the full circumstances behind the incident".
