Motoring experts have revealed exactly why you should be getting your vehicle serviced regularly.
According to a poll posted by breakdown company at RAC on Twitter, the majority of people believe that you need to book your car in for a service once a year.
Unlike an MOT, a service isn't a legal requirement. However, they're vital for making sure your car is in good working condition and for identifying any potential problems.
The experts say that a service is essentially a health check for your vehicle, where a mechanic will test all the major components to make sure they're working at their best.
Not only can a service increase your vehicle's value, but they're also essential for catching any issues before they cause an accident for you or other road users.
There are three types of service you can get - interim, full, and manufacturer.
The type will depend on how many miles you have travelled in the vehicle since your last service – or a set amount of time.
Generally speaking, you'll need an interim service around every six months or every 6,000 miles. A full service is required every 12,000 or 12 months, depending on which comes first.
Why are services important?
Getting regular services will drastically improve the safety of your vehicle in a couple of different ways.
Experts at the RAC said: "By getting a regular service you’re likely to see improved fuel efficiency, better handling and a smoother running engine, as well as peace of mind from knowing your vehicle is running optimally. It also decreases the likelihood of your car breaking down either at home or at the roadside.
"It can also help you avoid severe repair bills by nipping in the bud any issues that may lead to a problem over time. A full service history will also help your car maintain its market value should you choose to sell."
They'll also increase the lifespan of your car, saving you money in the long run.
What needs serviced regularly?
There are many different working parts to a car, but some are more likely to face problems than others.
A service can include more than 50 ‘points’ of inspection – some include more than 80 – but there are some key components that need the most attention from a mechanic, and they're listed below.
- Oil changes
- Tyre pressure and conditions
- Car fluids, such as coolants and screen wash
- Spark plug replacement
- Air/cabin filter changes
- Braking system checks
- Electronics
You can book your vehicle in for a service by contacting your local garage.
