Car expert shares biggest trick to save money on fuel during long journeys

When embarking on a long car journey, you'll probably be wondering when is the best time to stop and load up on fuel.

Chances are you'll need to do this at least once, depending on how far you plan on traveling.

We all know that petrol prices have fluctuated many times this year, and they still continue to be high - but apparently there's a trick to fuelling up that one woman has shared on social media that could help you cut costs.

TikTok user @SheTalksCars, who describes herself as "your go-to girl for car advice", has been sharing her tips on all things motoring with her 90,000 followers - and has racked up over one million likes.

And she recently posted one piece of advice for those of us planning to take a long trip, which she hailed as "simple" but makes "such a difference.

In the video, she explained: "This is how to save money on fuel if you're doing a long journey", with a caption across the screen reading "Don't make this mistake!"

She continued: "Don't use motorway service stations. Look how expensive that is!" pointing to a screen background of a fuel sign displaying 192.9p for petrol and 203.9p for diesel.

Instead, she suggested filling up before you set off, which will save you money.

She then joked: "Honestly, did they not get the memo?"

According to AutoExpress, the reason that fuel is so expensive at motorway service stations is because many of them are open 24 hours a day, and offer more services than a regular forecourt. They also likely pay higher rent prices for the buildings that they use.

And in more remote areas, fuel costs more because of the higher transport and supply costs - but according to RAC fuel spokesperson Simon Williams, this doesn't apply to motorway stations: "We can see no reason why motorway fuel should be so much more expensive. In fact, arguably it is much easier from a delivery point of view than it is getting fuel to urban filling stations."

In the videos comments, people were quick to agree that motorway fuel prices were unusually high.

One person said: "These services have no shame" along with a crying emoji, to which the woman replied: "Clearly. What is with those prices?!"

Another agreed: "Didn't know that til I had to use one once, it's a ripoff."

While a third chimed in: "Also drive at lower speeds".
