Police are investigating possible arson after a car was engulfed by flames late on Saturday, August 10, in Birmingham Gardens.

Around 10.40pm, Fire and Rescue NSW were called to Sandgate Road, Birmingham Gardens after reports of a vehicle on fire.

A Wallsend fire station spokesperson said crews arrived to the car "completely engulfed in flames".

Crews extinguished the blaze but the Toyota Yaris was completely destroyed.

While no one was with the vehicle at the time, NSW Police was treating the incident as arson, the fire station's statement said.

NSW Police were urging anyone with information related to the cause of the fire to contact Newcastle City Police District or crimestoppers on 1800 333 000 or on the Crimestoppers online reporting page at www.police.nsw.gov.au.

Investigations are ongoing.
