Car collides with Cockle Train near Port Elliot, three people escape injury

Cockle Train steams on after collision (ABC News: Alice Dempster)

A woman and her two children have avoided injury after the car they were travelling in collided with a steam train on the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia.

SA Police said the woman was driving along Basham Beach Road near Port Elliot around 12:30pm on Tuesday when her car and the Cockle Train collided at a level crossing.

The 43-year-old woman and her two children, aged 11 and 13, were "shaken" but not injured, police said.

The train, a popular tourist attraction that runs between Goolwa and Victor Harbor, had 115 passengers on board who also escaped injury.

Middleton, Port Elliot, and Goolwa Country Fire Service (CFS) crews and South Coast State Emergency Service volunteers attended the scene with SA Police and the SA Ambulance Service.

Basham Beach Road was closed while emergency services cleared the scene but it has since reopened.

Police said the woman would be fined for failing to give way to the train.

The train's remaining services for the day were cancelled while workers inspected the damage to the locomotive.

The Middleton CFS posted a statement after the incident urging drivers "to please pay attention around train crossings".

In May, a driver had what police described as a lucky escape after becoming stuck at a railway crossing in the Adelaide Hills and abandoning his car shortly before it was hit by a freight train.

In April, a 65-year-old man died after his ute collided with a freight train at Winninowie in South Australia's north.
