Car bursts into flames after being crashed by thieves on Glasgow street

A car burst into flames after being crashed by thieves last night.

Residents in Currie Street and the surrounding areas were shocked to hear a loud bang at around 9.20pm yesterday after the stolen vehicle lost control and careered down an embankment before exploding into flames.

Police Scotland rushed to the scene, quickly cordoning off the area while the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service got the blaze under control.

One local resident told Glasgow Live : "It came off the road at Currie Street, rolled down the embankment, crashing into several objects including planted trees and light installations.

"Looks to have come to a halt on the path leading onto the secondary steps at Currie Street, where the vehicle has rapidly caught fire.

"Several police entered the scene and cordoned off well past the area the crash occurred in, warding off neighbours and asking people to re-enter their homes."

Pieces of the car, including the bumper, remain at the scene but the vehicle itself was towed away after the fire was extinguished.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police received a report of the theft of a vehicle and subsequent vehicle fire on Currie Street in Glasgow around 9.20pm on Saturday, December 17.

“The fire was extinguished by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and enquiries into the incident are ongoing.”
