Teen arrested, rider in hospital: allegedly stolen ute hits motorcycle

A TEENAGER has been arrested and a man has been flown to hospital after an allegedly stolen ute crashed into a moped-style motorbike at Maitland.

Emergency services rushed to High Street just after 6am after reports a white Toyota Hilux and a motorcycle collided.

The 58-year-old man riding the scooter was treated at the scene by paramedics before being transported to John Hunter Hospital in an ambulance, with the Westpac Rescue Helicopter's critical care team, in a serious condition.

It's understood the man suffered serious leg injuries.

Port Stephens Hunter police allege a 16-year-old boy was behind the wheel of the ute and he was a arrested "near the scene" of the crash.

He was taken to Maitland Hospital under police guard for injuries he sustained and will undergo mandatory testing.

"Initial inquiries indicate the utility was stolen from Pelaw Main overnight," NSW Police said.

According to first responders, the ute and motorcycle had collided at high speed.

There are road closures in Maitland at the crash site.

A crime scene was established and specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit were tasked to the scene to piece together what happened.

Police closed High Street between the New England Highway and Hannan Street for several hours while the operation unfolded.

The road had reopened by about 11am.

The motorcycle and the ute were seized by police to undergo forensic examination.
