Captain Slow James May calls for speed limit to be reduced to 20mph as it's 'too fast'

Supercar fan James May says he wants the speed limit on most of Britain's roads reduced to 20 miles an hour.

The former Top Gear presenter - who was nicknamed 'Captain Slow' on Top Gear by co-stars Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond on the show - says 30mph is just too dangerous.

Ministers who have already cut the limit says it helps reduce road collisions and traffic noise, and may even encourage people to walk and cycle more.

But many motorists have slammed the limits saying journey times are increased with a poll last year finding almost nine in ten are against more roads being reduced to 20mph.

James is one of the 10% who are behind it - despite always demonstrating his love of fast cars on The Grand Tour.

He also feels there needs to be a “change in attitude” from motorists.

The 60-year-old old Martha Kearney on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “I live in Hammersmith in west London, which is an area where people seem particularly fond of just sort of running out into the street without looking, which is their prerogative because they’re people, not machines.

“But 20mph is plenty fast enough and 30 does feel too fast.

"To be honest, if you could go around somewhere like London or Manchester or Birmingham at a constant 20mph you’d be absolutely delighted."

He went on: “I do a lot of cycling as well around London and I think we can become over-obsessed with things like rules, street furniture, signage, traffic lights and so on.

“I think all these things, ultimately, are cured by a change in attitude, not a change in signage or infrastructure or colours or anything like that.

“That might be a stepping stone to ending road sectarianism and making towns and cities nicer places for everybody to travel around in.

"But I think, ultimately, it is about, well, a mindful attitude.”

He went on to speak on the programme about Jeremy Clarkson’ s recent controversial column attacking Meghan Markle.

He said it was 'creepy' but says he said he is in favour of free speech and “allowing the haters to hate”.

The former Top Gear presenter wrote in his newspaper column that he wanted the Duchess of Sussex to be "paraded naked through the streets" where he "dreams of people throwing lumps of excrement at her".

James said: "Well I think he did say something like: 'All people my age think the same way'.

"Well I’d like to go on record and say I don’t, and I’m only a few years younger than him."

"‘I wouldn’t have written that.

"I think it sounds a little bit too creepy but I’m also very much in favour of free speech and allowing the 'haters to hate' so we can see what they have to say."
