Captain America: Civil War review roundup as film hailed 'best Marvel Studios movie yet'

The first reviews of Captain America: Civil War are out - and it seems the third stand alone movie in Marvel 's Avengers series doesn't disappoint.

The next installment focuses on the events following Avengers: Age of Ultron pitting the superhero greats against each other.

After the events of Age of Ultron, another international incident involving Captain America and the Avengers results in collateral damage, prompting politicians to form a system of accountability and label Captain America a vigilante.

The film sees Iron Man and Captain America take opposing sides when the US Government attempts to implement the Superhero Registration Act.

It is a full-on Avenger against Avenger battle, with old friendships ruined and rivalries turning nasty.

Whether you're Team Cap or Team Iron Man, it seems the film pleases even the harshest of critics.

Here's a roundup of what they had to say.

Who needs a villain when you have Steve and Tony?

Giving the newest Avengers installment a full five stars, Empire was full of praise for the film: "Who needs a villain when you have Steve and Tony? Both protagonists. Both antagonists. And drawing other power-people to their cause in surprising ways.

"The clashes go far beyond the set-up squabbles of Avengers Assemble. Or even that other big 2016 superhero showdown.

The ultimate Marvel superhero event (Twitter @Marvel)

"Forget Batman v Superman. Here you get Ant-Man v Spider-Man, Hawkeye v Black Widow, Scarlet Witch v Vision, The Winter Soldier v Black Panther and Captain America v Iron Man, all rolled into one.

"And that is what you call the ultimate Marvel superhero event."

A damn-near perfect popcorn crowd-pleaser

Total Film 's five-star review gushes over the new superheroes debuting in this movie: "19-year-old Tom Holland not only makes a case for being the best screen Spidey so far, but also threatens to steal the entire film.

"His Peter Parker is perfect – nervy, goofy and instantly endearing. In the airport fight however he's truly spectacular, holding his own against the best the MCU has to offer.

"If there’s a risk of the Marvel ‘formula’ becoming stale, there isn’t any evidence of that here. Civil War isn’t just a damn-near-perfect popcorn crowd-pleaser; it doesn’t offer any easy answers for its combatants, or the world going forward.

"Team Cap or Team Iron Man? The real winner here is Team Marvel."

Captain America: Civil War is the darkest Marvel movie to date

Getting an almost-perfect score - 9.8/10 - from Comicbook.com, the film is described as being the best of the thirteen movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That's high praise.

"At no point during Captain America: Civil War does one character seem "more right" than the other, and it's a remarkable achievement. Everything the filmmakers and cast members said about audiences being truly divided turns out to be true.

"Captain America is not only fighting for something he believes in but what he believes in is credible and organic to the film's story. The same can be said for Iron Man.

(Twitter @Marvel)

"When the fights begin, the action is second to none. Despite being thirteen movies in, Marvel's team found ways to innovate the action packed scenes by capitalizing on each character's abilities and chemistry with one another for impressively creative sequences.

"Captain America: Civil War is a truly epic and gigantic super hero film with on point emotional moments and the best action sequences to date."

The three movies come together to create the greatest superhero trilogy of all time

Cinemablend gives the film a solid five out of five rating, saying Joe and Anthony Russo "succeed in raising the bar higher than you’d think it could go."

"Functioning as both a sequel to Captain America: The Winter Solider and The Avengers: Age of Ultron, the film is the most comprehensive Marvel Cinematic Universe chapter to date, and while that put a great deal on the plate of writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the movie soars because the challenge is accepted and responded to in brilliant and entertaining fashion.

"Bringing together tremendous character dynamics; bold structure; an emotional narrative earned after years of story work; and spell-binding, fun action sequences, it’s everything a blockbuster should be.

"The Marvel Cinematic Universe on the whole is filled with great films and blockbuster gems, but between The First Avenger, The Winter Solider and now Civil War, it’s been firmly proven that they have a better grip on Captain America than any of their heroes.

"And it can be said with confidence that the three movies come together to create the greatest superhero trilogy of all time."

An enjoyable, but flawed follow-up to both The Winter Soldier and Age of Ultron

IGN were slightly less enamoured with the film, calling it a "an enjoyable, but flawed follow-up to both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

"It’s not nearly as powerful or gripping as The Winter Soldier, but it also does a much better job of juggling so many different characters than Age of Ultron did.

"Cap's bromantic devotion to Bucky that trumps all else" (Marvel)

"Featuring what's arguably the best ever screen depiction of Spider-Man as well as a cool new hero in Black Panther, Captain America: Civil War can't quite recapture the emotional and cerebral strengths of its predecessor, The Winter Soldier.

"Its central villain is ultimately lackluster and its final act, while dramatic, lacks the energy and effectiveness of the central action set-piece that assembles the Avengers in instant-classic fashion."

Captain America: Civil War is in UK cinemas from April 29th.
