Caoimhin Kelleher has suggested he could look to leave Liverpool, as he voiced his frustration at the signing of Giorgi Mamardashvili.
The Irishman has been back-up to Alisson in recent seasons at Anfield, but at the end of last season spoke out on his desire to be a first-choice goalkeeper.
Kelleher did not secure a move over the summer, with Liverpool rejecting a bid from Nottingham Forest late in the summer, and he is again set to play a limited role this season.
Kelleher’s hopes of eventually becoming Liverpool’s No1 have been further dented by the signing of Mamardashvili for £30million, in a move viewed as the club beginning to plan for life without Alisson. The Brazilian is out of contract in 2026.
Mamardashvili will remain at Valencia on loan this season before arriving at Liverpool next summer, and Kelleher’s latest comments suggest he has little interest in competing with the Georgian.
“I made it clear in the last few years that I want to go somewhere and be a number one,” Kelleher said at a press conference on Tuesday, ahead of Ireland’s Nations League clash with Greece.
“The club has made that decision to get a goalkeeper (Mamardashvili) which makes it look like they’ve made a decision to go in another direction.
“Liverpool have rejected a few bids as well. It’s not always in my hands to fully make the decision. My ambition is clear. I’m good enough & I want to go and play week in, week out.”
