Caoimhin Kelleher makes 'difficult' Liverpool selection admission and sets appearances target

Caoimhin Kelleher has admitted it is “difficult” not to be a regular starter at Liverpool.

The Reds goalkeeper was the hero once again on Wednesday night as he helped Liverpool beat Derby County in the Carabao Cup. Kelleher saved three penalties in the shootout to send Jurgen Klopp ’s side through to the fourth round.

After a goalless 90 minutes, Kelleher was needed for Liverpool for the resulting shootout. His saves to deny Conor Hourihane, Craig Forsyth and Lewis Dobbin helped the Reds claim a 3-2 victory on spot-kicks.

Kelleher’s first appearance of the season came in the win over Derby, and was also his first outing since the Carabao Cup final victory over Chelsea in February. The Republic of Ireland international has admitted that it’s not easy to be a back-up to Alisson Becker, but says that he hopes to get more opportunities in the near future.

“I approach every day like I’m going to play, so I have to be ready to play and anything can happen at any time,” Kelleher told LFCTV.

“I love training with the goalie group every day, it’s a really good group to work with so I enjoy going in every day.

“At the same time as well, it is difficult not getting the games, but the more we can do well in cup competitions then the more game time hopefully I can get.”
