Caoimhin Kelleher delivers his verdict on Michael Obafemi's stunning strike

Caoimhin Kelleher has admitted that Michael Obafemi’s wonder-goal against Scotland was unstoppable.

The Liverpool goalkeeper had the perfect view of Obafemi’s sensational second-half strike - and he could see the ball swerve through the air before beating Craig Gordon and smashing into the back of the net.

“It was a heck of a strike, to be fair,” said Kelleher, who kept his first clean sheet of the Nations League campaign.

“When you catch these balls well there's a lot of movement on it. It was some strike.”

Kelleher hailed the performance and the result, saying: “The squad deserved it, to be fair.

“We put in a lot of work over the last two camps. The big one was today and it was very satisfying for all of us.

“We defended brilliantly, the back three in front of me were amazing, they won every header, blocks.

“It was quite an easy afternoon for me and credit must go to the defenders in front of me who were brilliant.”

The 3-0 thumping of Scotland, Kelleher said, was the perfect response after back-to-back defeats to Armenia and Ukraine.

“It was disappointing but we were all quite motivated for this one, we knew it would be sold out at the Aviva,” he said.

“Against Scotland it's such a big game. You try to forget Ukraine as quickly as you can. We were just excited and wanted to put in a good performance, which we did.

“We deserved a performance like this. We were unlucky against Ukraine. We wanted a strong performance and we got it today.”

Kelleher insisted that he didn’t spend too much time reflecting on the goal that earned Ukraine a win last Wednesday - an inswinging free-kick from near the right touch-line that bounced straight into the far corner.

“I just go through it with the coaches, dissect it and move on,” he said. “I do move on quickly and forget it. There's no point in dwelling on stuff.”

He praised his fellow Corkman Alan Browne, who opened the scoring and impressed at right-wing-back, where he kept Anfield star Andy Robertson quiet.

“I thought he was brilliant today,” said Kelleher. “It was such a tough task, coming up against probably the best left back in the world.

“He did exceptional, coming into a role that he's not too familiar with, he doesn't play there a lot, he was brilliant.”

Looking ahead to next Tuesday’s clash with Ukraine in Lodz, he added: “If we get another win we're right back in the group.

“So Tuesday is a big game for us and hopefully we can win again.

“They were very good here, they will be good over there as well.

“We've watched their games and we have seen how their squad, their team play. We will be more than ready for them.”
