KANNUR
The Cannanore Cantonment Board (CCB) has served another notice on the E.K. Nayanar Academy in Burnacherry for constructing structures in violation of the Cantonment Act.
The CCB had issued a show cause notice to the academy under Section 247 of the Cantonments Act March 19, 2006, asking it to reply within a week.
This was after the CCB had permitted the academy to erect a semi-temporary tent for hosting the upcoming 23rd Party Congress of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in Kannur next month.
However, the academy violated the permission and constructed a permanent structure , said A. Vinod Vikneswaran, Chief Executive Officer, CCB.
The Cannanore Cantonment is one of the 62 cantonments in India and the only one in Kerala. Cantonments Boards are local bodies, autonomous in character and are responsible for municipal administration of the cantonment area.
He said the academy director had replied to the notice stating that it was a temporary construction, which would be removed after the Party Congress. However, the reply was unsatisfactory, he said.
“Hence, the board decided to serve another notice under Section 248 of the Act, which gives the board power to direct the academy to demolish the building or accept by way of composition such sum as it may think reasonable, after getting the concurrence of the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief,” he said. The Cantonment Board also has the power to seal the unauthorised construction, he said.
The director of the academy was unavailable for comments.
