Canelo Alvarez was fooled by fake Lionel Messi photo which left boxer furious

Canelo Alvarez's furious threat to Lionel Messi came after he was fooled by a picture appearing to show the Argentina star using a Mexico jersey as a cleaning brush.

The undisputed super-middleweight champion has been enraged on social media after video appeared to show Messi kick a jersey given to him by a Mexican player after their game on Saturday. And one cheeky fan shared a fake Instagram story allegedly from the legendary footballer's page which showed a Mexico jersey being used to clean the floor.

However, Alvarez appears not to have seen the funny side of the message, responding to the obvious joke photo with the Spanish term "HDP" and an angry emoji. HDP is short for Hijo De Puta, which roughly translates to "Son of a b****" in English, although the word 'puta' more directly translates to a prostitute.

The tweet from Alvarez responding to the post appears to be his last on the subject, for now. But it was the end of an hours-long onslaught that the boxing champion had sent, which drew in angry replies to the likes of Sergio Aguero and Cesc Fabregas as well as journalists and former Mexico international Miguel Layun.

He slammed Aguero, in particular, branding him a "hypocrite b******" in one of his more aggressive tweets after the former footballer attempted to explain football dressing room culture. He also claimed that the ex-Manchester City striker had been sending him DMs prior to his public message.

"Mr Canelo, don't look for excuses or problems, surely you don't know about soccer and what happens in a locker room," Aguero wrote in a tweet in Spanish. "The shirts are always on the floor after the games are over due to sweat and then if you see well, he makes the movement to remove the booty and accidentally hits it."

But the undisputed super-middleweight champion didn't fancy the Argentine's train of thought, and branded him a "b******" and a hypocrite for getting involved in the dispute. "You b****** too... You wrote to me oh oh Canelo and now sucking, don't be a hypocrite b******."

And in a later tweet, Alvarez wrote: "Unfair? Unfair what you did right now you write this and a minute ago you s*** on my Instagram DMs you have to be clear and to the point. Rather you have to have eggs!"
