Cancer symptoms that appear first thing in morning as expert lists 'early' signs

There are some well-known cancer warning signs that can be spotted at any time of day, such as unusual lumps and unexplained breathlessness.

According to an expert, there are some symptoms that are more likely to present when you are waking up in the morning.

Abbas Kanani, a pharmacist at Chemist Click, has warned that a persistent cough, fatigue and night sweats when you wake up could all be warning signs of cancer.

While smokers will sometimes wake up with a cough, the expert advises seeing a GP if it persists for more than two weeks - regardless of whether you smoke or not.

Another symptom which can be tricky to spot as it can be fairly common is morning fatigue - this could be particularly worrying if it is accompanied by other symptoms.

"It’s normal to feel a little tired in the morning, but if this is not usual for you, or you are noticing fatigue lasting throughout the day, you should get this checked out," Mr Kanani told the Express.

The pharmacist added: "Get this checked out with your GP, especially if night sweats are accompanied by fatigue, weight loss or bruising."

While you might not feel yourself sweating while asleep, you'll know if you've experienced night sweats as your bed would be wet or damp in the morning.

Other symptoms of cancer

According to the NHS, other symptoms which can appear at any time of the day include:

  • Chest pain and breathlessness
  • Changes in bowel habits
  • Unusual bleeding
  • Lumps
  • Mole changes
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Tummy or back pain
  • Indigestion and heartburn
  • Itchy or yellow skin

Scotland's NHS Inform adds that: "It's important for doctors to know what type of cancer a person has. The type of cancer is generally based on the part of your body and the type of cell where the cancer first developed.

"The most common places for cancer to develop are the skin, lungs, breasts, prostate, colon, and rectum."

If you are experiencing symptoms, you should get in touch with your GP.
