Cancer patient went without medication after flight chaos stranded him in Egypt

A husband and wife were stranded in Egypt for 11 days when they had three easyJet flights cancelled.

Ken Herbert, 55, went without vital cancer medication during the forced stay in Hurghada, Egypt, leaving his wife Justine, 52, "worried out of (her) mind".

Justine was also forced to miss over a week of her job as an NHS worker after three flights in a row were grounded.

The couple are also £1,158 out of pocket having forked out for extra flights to get home and emergency airport parking.

They are the latest in a long line of easyJet customers to find themselves stuck abroad this month due to a string of last-minute cancellations.

"The first time our flight was cancelled it was like 'bonus day'," Justine told The Mirror.

"The second time there were tears. On the third I got hysterical. It was absolutely surreal and it has been absolute chaos."

Justine, her mum and Ken flew out to Hurghada on May 7 for a 16 day break in their holiday apartment.

After a lovely time away in the Red Sea resort and having packed away and cleaned up their second home, they headed to the airport on May 23.

"We got a text at about 6.40pm saying our flight had been cancelled," Justine said.

"There we were with suitcases and rucksacks in a bar. We have never ever had any issues, and always used easyJet.

"The site was crashing, but we manage to get flights for Thursday, May 26."

After heading back to the apartment and unpacking against, Justine and Ken enjoyed a few extra days off in Egypt.

However, the mood quickly soured when they received an email explaining that their replacement flight had also been cancelled.

Justine continued "I just sobbed for two hours. By that point I was anxious and ready to get home. I had had a grandson born (while we were away).

"It wasn't like extra holiday. We just wanted to get home. I had to use six days of my annual leave."

What was making the enforced stay particularly stressful was Ken's dwindling supply of medication.

"My husband is recovering from stage four blood cancer and he is on a lot of medication," Justine said.

"He had very intense chemo and had several heart attacks. He has one medication which stops his blood getting sticky and sticking to his five stents.

"He ran out of these and we weren't able to get any more."

By this point the couple's travel insurance policy had run out, meaning they'd face a potentially enormous bill if Ken ended up needing medical treatment.

To maximise his chances of keeping well, Ken had to keep out of the heat and ensure his body remained at a steady temperature.

On June 1 their third easyJet flight home was cancelled before they finally managed to get back two days later.

"I work in a neuro team in the community, so my appointments were either cancelled or someone else went in for me," Justine explained of the emergency time off she had to take.

"You feel very guilty, like you're letting the team down.

"I don't want to think about flying at the moment so we decided to sell our apartment. Medically (what happened) could've gone very wrong.

"It's not about the money. Passengers can't be treated like that. They need to sort themselves out. My husband could've not come back alive."

EasyJet has been contacted for comment.
