A man has pleaded not guilty to threatening the mother of tennis star Nick Kyrgios with a gun and stealing the athlete's luxury car.
The Canberra man aged in his 30s allegedly pointed a long-barrelled gun at Norlaila Kyrgios on the morning of May 1 this year, and demanded she hand over the keys to the athlete's green Tesla.
Police say officers then pursued the man through Canberra's northern suburbs, before he was later stopped and arrested.
Court documents revealed Kyrgios used an app on his phone to track the location of the car and provide updates to police, as well as remotely limit the car's maximum speed to 80 kilometres per hour.
He remains in custody and today was dialled into the ACT Magistrates Court via telephone, where Magistrate Glenn Theakston advised him there was a level of media interest in his case.
Legal Aid solicitor Jan de Bruin told the court he had been "instructed to enter pleas of not guilty" on behalf of the man.
Magistrate Theakston adjourned the case for six weeks.
The court also heard there was uncertainty over whether the aggravated robbery charge would be heard in the Magistrates Court or elevated to the Supreme Court.
For it to be heard in the lower court, the consent of both parties is usually required.
Prosecutor Timara Callaghan told the court consent had "not been considered" by the prosecution as yet, but it would likely finalise its position once the brief of evidence was compiled.
