(Picture: PA)Black poets will read works from Canary Wharf’s own take on Speakers’ Corner to inspire listeners on dates throughout this month.
During October, which is Black History Month, spoken word artists will deliver truths, experiences and opinions from the newly created Poets’ Corner - where passers-by will have the chance to listen and debate.
Taking part are young people’s poet laureate Theresa Lola, British-Trinidadian dub poet Roger Robinson, Nigerian-British author Sarah Aluko, and internationally acclaimed poet, playwright and performer Inua Ellams.
The project, which is co-run by Canary Wharf’s management and creative collective SXWKS, will see events held from 1pm on October 8, 15, 19 and 22. All performances will be 30 minutes long. There will also be printed poems distributed from vending machines in Canary Wharf.
Theresa Lola said the project will give the chance for Black voices to be heard and inspire the community.
She said: “Poetry offers its author a creative way to capture feelings and experience, and I hope by sharing my poems aloud, I can portray an insight into my own life and culture in a way that encourages others to do the same.”
Poets’ Corner will be located on Crossrail Place Roof Garden.
