Canal+ Group raises stake in Viu to 30%.

France's Canal+ Group has increased its stake in multi-territory Asian streaming platform Viu to 30%. The additional investment reflects Canal+'s confidence in Viu and its teams, as well as its commitment to making Asia its next growth market through a strategic partnership with PCCW. Canal+ now holds an option to raise its stake to 50%, with its total investment in Viu reaching $300 million.

Viu, a premium streaming service available in Asia, the Middle East, and South Africa, has shown significant growth. In 2023, Viu experienced a 27% increase in revenue, driven by a rise in both subscription and advertising revenue. The platform's paid subscribers grew by 10% to 13.4 million, leading to a 32% surge in subscription revenue. Viu's advertising revenue also saw a 15% increase, with a total subscriber base of 62.4 million by the end of 2023.

Cheng Cheng Films has announced a theatrical release for a 4K restored version of the film 'July Rhapsody,' directed by Hong Kong's Ann Hui. The movie, featuring the final performance of Cantopop icon Anita Mui and the acting debut of Karena Lam, will be followed by a VOD and video release in the fall. Hong Kong-based TV rights distributor O4 Media has expanded its Japanese content portfolio through an exclusive deal with Tokyo Broadcasting System, offering premium scripted formats like 'My Family,' 'Dearest,' and 'Eye Love You' for India.

Tracey Rigney, a Wotjobaluk and Ngarrindjeri woman, has been named the artist-in-residence for 2024 at the Australian Film Television and Radio School. With a career spanning over 20 years, Rigney has worked on various projects, including documentaries, short films, and TV series. She is currently writing her debut feature film, 'Everywhen,' set in her mother's country.

Renowned filmmaker Ron Howard and producer Bill Connor will be guest speakers at the Screen Forever conference organized by Screen Producers Australia.
