Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Expected To Resign

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau attends an announcement

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to announce his resignation imminently, according to a source close to the leader. Trudeau, the first child of former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau, appears to be following in his father's footsteps, four decades after the elder Trudeau stepped down as prime minister of Canada.

Trudeau's political career began in 2008 when he was elected as a member of Parliament, eventually becoming the leader of the Liberal Party five years later. In 2015, he secured the premiership after campaigning on an anti-Conservative platform and winning a clear majority in the October elections, defeating his predecessor, Stephen Harper.

As one of the country's youngest-ever leaders, Trudeau gained popularity by championing progressive values on the global stage, positioning himself as a contrast to former President Donald Trump. He won consecutive elections in 2019 and 2021.

However, Trudeau's political fortunes have waned in recent times due to a series of setbacks. Accusations of racism emerged after old photographs surfaced showing him in blackface, and his handling of vaccine mandates during the COVID-19 pandemic sparked public discontent.

Trudeau's approval ratings have declined, exacerbated by threats of tariffs from incoming US President Trump and the unexpected resignation of his former political ally and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.
