A Canadian politician threated to "turn off the lights" in American homes if President-elect Donald Trump follows through with imposing tariffs.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Canadian premiers on Wednesday to discuss Trump's 25% tariff on all Canadian imports.
While leaving the meeting, Premier Doug Ford said he believes there is a "100%" chance the tariffs will go into effect in early January, and, in retaliation, he suggested Ontario's energy exports should be "cut off" to Americans living in border states, according to a Global News report.
"It would turn off the lights to a million-and-a-half Americans. If they come at us we have to stand up for Canadians, we have to stand up for Ontarians," Ford told Global News.
Approximately 85% of electricity imported to the U.S. is generated in Canada, according to reporting by Global News.
Other measures Canadian officials allegedly discussed included restricting exports of minerals required for elective vehicle batteries and forbidding the Liquor Control Board of Ontario, the world's largest purchasers of alcohol, from buying alcohol made in the U.S.
"You come in and attack Ontario ... we're going to use every tool in our toolbox to defend Ontarians and Canadians across the border," Ford said at a press conference on Thursday, per Global News.
"Let's hope that never comes to that point," he added.
